Building My Yoga Body

I came to Pure when they first opened. I had done yoga before but I thought it wasn’t really for me, since it’s the very opposite of dance training. I just started going mostly for meditation and stress relief.

Now I realize that different yoga classes are perfect for different performances. I’m in a piece now at the Met Opera where we sit in these really angled, twisted positions. So for that I usually do a hot power slow flow, where you have to maintain poses, and it gets me ready for those contortions on stage.

Body Language

With my own company, I’m lucky to have found dancers I love working with. Every choreographer develops a specific dance language and gravitates towards dancers who speak it. When I am stuck, I feel like my dancers can finish my sentences.

I take all my dancers to Pure. Yoga-inspired moves definitely show up in our studio practice, as part of our vocabulary. You can’t help but take influence from what’s around you, it seeps right into your work.

The Yoga Mentality

The dancer mentality is that you’re never good enough. That’s the old-world ballet training talking. For me, Pure is about having a space where it’s OK not to be good at something, and no one’s judging you.

That kind of experience will make you a better dancer. Yoga also reminds you that you give yourself the approval you need. You don’t have to seek affirmation out in the world.
