Featured Teacher: Hee Boon

A yoga practitioner for almost a decade, Hee Boon truly was attracted to yoga for both its physical fitness and mind-calming benefits. This native of Malaysia and former Art Director in Graphic Design finds joy in personalising his style in teaching and practice, and thrives on sharing it with his students.

Where are you originally from?
I'm from Malaysia

How long have you been teaching?
6 years

Who was your very first yoga teacher and what was he/she like?
Master Kamal (Sri. Srinivas Suresh Kamal). He is a jovial, passionate and loving Teacher

How long have you been practising?
9 years

Originally, what attracted you to yoga?
The asanas that can give me a good workout and the pranayama techniques that can clear and calm my mind

What motivates you to practise today?
It has become a part of my life. I'm constantly developing my own unique voice, personality and style in my teaching and practice to share with my students, as well as the spiritual aspects of Yoga.

How would you describe your personal practice?
Vinyasa style that is fluid and with a sense of steadiness.

Before you became a yoga teacher, what did you do?
I was an Art Director in Graphic Design

What do you love about teaching?
Being able to share with my students what I have learned, be it physically or mentally. Also, seeing someone progress in their practice and find peace in themselves.

What do you find challenging about teaching?
Being able to be there and now in every moment of the class :p

Describe your ideal class (as a teacher).
A class that has a balance of asanas, pranayama, meditation and relaxation.

Describe a class that you would find challenging or difficult (as a teacher).
A traditional Iyengar class that not only challenges the physical body but the mental one as well.

What teacher has had the biggest impact on your practice?
My first teacher Master Kamal -- he is the one who brought me into the Yoga World. Also Shiva Rea for her fluidity in her practice that is both powerful and meditative at the same time. (And I love her music sense). Judy Krupp, a great teacher who is good in body awareness -- her teaching is both inspiring and light-hearted. Desiree Rumbaugh, who brings anusara style to a physical and mental high.

What is your most embarrassing moment in the studio (as a teacher or student)?
Farted in the class both as teacher and student :p

Where is the strangest place you've practised yoga?
Toilet, practicing basti (squatting). :p

Aside from yoga, what other hobbies or interests do you have?
Swimming and working out in the gym. Very much into all sorts of design (graphic, interior, fashion and architecture), movies, music and clubbing.

Describe your most profound yoga experience.
A sense of lightness and calmness after a meditation session.

If you weren't a yoga teacher, what would you be?
I would love to be a travelling Photo Journalist who practises Yoga and Meditation.
